Art curriculum overview:
The national curriculum for Art and Design aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences;
- Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques;
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design;
- Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Key Stage 3 focuses on the development of skills and understanding of formal elements.
Year 7: Students are taught all formal elements with particular focus on drawing and painting techniques.
Year 8: Building on knowledge and techniques learned in Year 7 students begin to develop a wider range of skills and techniques. Base knowledge such as tonal drawing and painting in acrylics is revisited and further advanced. New techniques such as clay is introduced.
Year 9: Prior knowledge from Years 7 and 8 is revisited to mature and cement. Students further develop their ability to reflect on both their own work and professional artists’ work, to develop critical thinking skills and hone technique. New techniques such as oil pastels and mixed media sculpture is introduced. Work is more advanced with a view to aid transition into Key Stage 4.
