Geography

The world in which we live is likely to change more in the next 50 years than it has ever done before. Geography explains why, and helps to prepare you for those changes. Geography is a dynamic and rigorous subject that is firmly grounded in the real world. Geography is about the future and encourages flexible thinking. The transferable skills which geography fosters, such as analytical and conceptual thinking, alongside increased knowledge and understanding of social, economic, environmental and political events on a local and global scale are an asset in the complex world of employment today.

Geography is distinctive in that it occupies the middle ground between social sciences and natural sciences. Geography takes advantage of its position between both these groups of subjects and students will develop an appreciation of, and a respect for, alternative approaches, viewpoints and ideas.

In Standard Level students study two optional themes; Higher Level (HL) students study three optional themes, providing further breadth. HL students study the HL extension - global interactions - and examine, evaluate and synthesize the prescribed concepts. These are, by their nature, complex, contestable, interlinked and require holistic treatment which provides further depth at HL.

The geography course requires no specific prior learning. No particular background in terms of specific subjects studied for national or international qualifications is expected or required.

The skills needed for the geography course are developed within the context of the course itself. However, having studied geography before for either MYP or IGCSE is considered to be an advantage.

Alongside the core fieldwork associated with the course, there may be an opportunity to take part in extension fieldwork to develop your wider geographical skills.

We also have a Geographical Society, with the aim of developing a student-led committee to organise guest speakers, debates and virtual discussions as well as social activities. You can also expect wider geographical enrichment through attending university lectures and visiting geographical places of interest.
